Proposals (in plain English)

Our Business Proposal

Each and every jewellery piece we make is uniquely individual (hand-made, not machine made like plain link chain is manufactured).

As each hand-crafted jewellery piece contains gemstones with natural variations and slight differences that make every stone unique, so too in the ancient tradition of human adornment, the artisan jewellery crafter creates each piece individually by hand, which makes every AJS jewellery piece quite individually unique.

Don't have much money to spend? Can't afford the high cost of faceted precious gemstones like diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires? How about colourful semi-precious gemstones, and a reduced carat Gold or even in Silver? Less precious metal means less cost, so high-quality jewellery designed and crafted to use less metal and less expensive gemstones, such as semi-precious polished beads, creates relatively great value-for-money at affordable pricing.

Our Business Model

Our Business Model at AJS is one of generosity, sharing the beauty and enjoyment of feel-good jewellery, not your usual business model based upon greed.

We design, make and offer artisan pieces at affordable prices. Compare for yourself, where other jewellers charge much much more for lesser quality items. We keep costs down, and pass on the savings, providing great value for money.

Our business is primarily service focussed, with a customer first attitude:

  • First to keep you informed of everything, at every stage.
We are fully transparent in what we are doing, and going to do for you.
  • First to respond to your queries, requests, and orders.
We provide detailed descriptions and information about all our products.
  • First to acknowledge transaction details.
We provide detailed transaction information for all transactions.
  • First to prioritise safe and secure jewellery browsing and purchasing services.
All our website pages are highly secure and safe from prying eyes, as evidenced by the 's' in 'https' on all our pages. Our server is secure.
  • First to present detailed sale terms and conditions, in plain English, not fineprint.
No other online jewellery business presents their sale terms as clearly and as detailed as we have, right here, you're reading right now.

Origins (in plain English)

About AJS

AJS are a 3rd gen family jewellery business (since 1938), manufacturing jewellers, designers, gemmologists and valuers, providing quality craftsman handmade custom pieces.

The timeless value combination of polished semi-precious gemstones bound with precious metals has been with us for millenia since the ancient times.

Genuine solid precious metals of gold and silver alloys, not hollow, filled, rolled or electroplated gold.

Excellent budget-conscious value-for-money high-quality, custom, handmade designer jewellery, when compared with faceted precious gems.

We design, manufacture, and market a unique range of artisan* custom, fully-handmade, beauty-enhancing, high-quality, value-for-money jewellery, crafted with precious-metal wrapped large beaded semi-precious gemstones.

*An artisan is a skilled craft worker who makes or creates material objects partly or entirely by hand.

Our online range concept

The initial concept of making a range of jewellery involving threaded gemstone beads in precious metals came from the idea of home-made production jewellery that did NOT involve metal soldering which would greatly increase the costs and the sale price of the finished goods, as soldering would involve heat, fuels, cleaning, and polishing time, on top of manufacture assembly.

Although we have the skills, experience and ability to produce soldered goods, the concept of producing jewellery to sell online meant that a cheaper (less expensive and more likely to sell) product was necessary to compete in a crowded market against established retail jewellery store chains.

As our Master Jeweller Colin (who came up with the online jewellery range concept) explained:

"I recall a time at home when I was eight or nine (one of my oldest memories) when my father using a simple twisted wire method to assemble pearls and gemstone beads (mostly black onyx with the pearl to give that formal black and white appearance) into beautiful light-weight twisted gold bar and wire wrapped gem and pearl bracelets for Bruce and Walsh (B&W) Jewellers in King St Sydney during the 1960's."

"At the time, I got to meet the Australian (rep?) for Mikimoto Pearls of Japan (the business who had discovered the method for artificially inseminating oysters to manufacture pearls on demand, now called cultured pearls) and was introduced to his family who were wearing traditional Japanese ceremonial dress in my own Australian 60's home, an eye opener for me back then."

"My parents hosted the rep's family for dinner, but you can be sure the visitors were checking out life in a strange foreign land, and who was responsible for turning their loose pearls into a retailable jewellery product for the Australian market, into something that was other than a classic silk threaded string of plain pearls."

"God knows whatever cuisine Mum served up as Australian fare? It would have been genuine Margaret Fulton style in classic porcelain Corningware."

"Interestingly, they gifted us a small Japanese portable cast iron Hibachi (coal) mini stove, which we ignorantly used afterwards as a picnic BBQ and only with chopped wood. It wasn't until nearly 50 years later that I observed Hibachi style cooking on Masterchef, recognising it from my youth and only recently realising it was actually designed for low slow coal cooking of small cut meats, rather than over a burning wood open flame! Live and learn."

"Curiously enough, I now observe that a Japanese local population and culture have grouped at Lindfield on Sydney's North Shore (near our old family Jewellery store in Roseville), and have established their Japanese based school there too." However, that Japanese family was the only one I knew of in my childhood. They were still quite despised at that time after the war (in my grandparents lives)."

"In any case, I observed how round beads were threaded with gold wire into a bracelet, whether they be pearls or onyx or other gem materials. I am now doing that myself, sixty years later."

When we now Google search the history of Bruce and Walsh, there is no actual history that appears to exist for B&W itself, however the building site remains, and two of the founders grandsons have continued in the jewellery retail business, one in Mona Vale, and one in Naremburn.

For those interested in pearls, we note there is a diverse online pearl discussion site at pearl-guide.com.

Trading Terms (in plain English)

Our Business Terms

Warranty of all jewellery articles manufactured and sold by AJS online are guaranteed against quality defect for twelve (12) months from original date of purchase, for manufacturing defect (link breakage) or major imperfection (gem breakage).

Should an AJS product become defective under normal usage conditions and require warranty service, rest assured that AJS will repair or replace, at our sole discretion, "with-like" (as close as is possible and practical) product to match original purchase selection.
Warranty does NOT include free product upgrade or lengthening.
Warranty does NOT include coverage for article loss, or in the event of article theft.
Warranty does NOT include incidental direct or consequential costs arising from product defect, under any circumstances.

An AJS Jewellery article property transfer of ownership by resale, inheritance, second-hand (used) gift or loan does NOT include transfer of warranty nor implied obligation by AJS. The warranty of an AJS Jewellery article remains solely with the original Purchaser (upon proof of ownership, such as original dated receipt of sale purchase in the name of the Purchaser).

Repairs by AJS to jewellery articles manufactured and sold by AJS online are further Guaranteed under Warranty for three (3) months from date of repair, or twelve (12) months from original date of purchase, whichever is the later, for the repair works themselves, NOT for the whole product after any component part repair.

All Servicing (Repairs, Returns and Refund) requests for whatever reason should be directed to our email in the first instance, with photos of the damaged or defective article clearly showing the damage or defect, and with an written explanation (in English) of the reason for the service request.
Our Contact details are at the bottom of every web page on Our site/s.

Warranty Service can only be performed in Country of Origin (Australia) , at Our Business facilities on the NSW Central Coast. All products requiring Service must be returned to Us, under Our 'Terms' and 'Conditions' as detailed herein. We have NO Service arrangements with any other Jewellery Service Agents in any other Countries.

Should you have received your AJS Jewellery article for a gift as a new unworn article, and you therefore don't have a purchase receipt, fear not, because we keep a record of all transactions and jewellery articles, and can identify you as the gift recipient if we were requested to send it to you directly. Otherwise, please provide us with the details of who gifted it to you, and when you received it.

Note that gift recipients cannot claim a Refund, as they did not purchase the article, so we cannot refund them directly. If the article becomes faulty within Our Terms of Warranty, We shall Repair it under Warranty.

Note Also that "change-of-mind" or "incorrect size" or "not my colour" is NOT regarded as a valid reason to 'Return for Refund'.
Accordingly, you should choose with care before purchase.

Tip: Extension pieces are clip-on and so can be self-added to any article, and are available for purchase in the 'Accessories' product range.

Note Too that Returns must be in good condition, subject to fair Wear and Tear (obviously excluding any product defect/damage).
Those Returned articles found to have been subject to abuse (whether accidental or not), at our sole discretion may NOT be accepted as Servicable under Warranty, and subsequently be charged for Repairs. If so, We will provide a detailed explanation for our decision reasoning.

For an article to be considered worthy of Replacement or Refund it must show at least 25% being defective, otherwise it will be repaired.
For example, with a 12 bead bracelet, 25% is equivalent to three (3) of the bead sections in size and length being defective (although these defective sections need not necessarily be adjacent to each other.
The return of a damaged or defective article after the product Warranty has expired, WILL be repaired and charged at YOUR additional expence.
If an article IS found to be defective under warranty, yet ineligible for Replacement or Refund (as just described above), it WILL be repaired and returned at OUR expense and apology.

If an AJS Jewellery article IS agreed by AJS to be sent to us for Service (Repair, Replacement, or Refund), following the initial email request and subsequent AJS confirmation, we WILL ALSO cover the cost of packaging and postage by sending a prepaid and pre-addressed package to you, for you to return it to us for servicing.
We shall then either Repair, Replace, or Refund the article as appropriate, and send the result back to you at our expence, with our apologies.

All correspondence should be in English language, as we can't communicate in non-English languages. Although we can make use of Google translate, it isn't a reliable service for business transactions.

Our Contact details are at the bottom of every web page. Email is our preferred contact method, as it ensures that:

  1. There is a written record and history for all communications.
  2. Communications are not accidentally missed (dependant upon availability to respond immediately, like as with phone calls).
  3. Photos can be attached.

Social Media (SM) pages are NOT proactively monitored, and so SM communications can easily remain unseen for days or longer, and so are not suitable for order requests or sales enquiries. SM is soley for our self user conversation group, and an advertising portal into our website and specials.

AJS is a Registed Business in Australia, and recognises the NSW legal jurisdiction. Should you feel the need to get legal with us, we highly recommend you seek arbitration in NSW before taking any legal action.
Please act reasonably, and first contact us directly for any and all relative concerns you may have. We would much rather amicably resolve any such concerns well before you may feel the need to escalate them into legal matters. Our contact details are at the bottom of every web page on Our site/s.

Our Contact details are at the bottom of every web page on Our site/s.

AJS is Australian based, located on the New South Wales (NSW) state's Central Coast, and so all Our pricing is based in Australian Dollars (AU$) currency, which is floated by the Australian Government, and so exchange rates with other currencies in the world varies from moment to moment, beyond Our control.

If You are located outside of Australia and would like to purchase Our products by using a non-Australian currency, the Cart payment section may allow an exchange with Your particular currency, and if so will show You the current exchange rate being used for the transaction, which will be relevant and applicable only at that particular time for only that particular purchase transaction.

Exchange rates are not set by AJS — as they are set by Our Cart financial transaction service provider, a separate business with no affiliation to AJS. We pay a small percentage transaction fee to Our Cart financial transaction service provider, and We receive no payback, commission nor discount in receipt, nor do We have any influence of any kind upon their business exchange rate decisions or actions.

We do however, provide alternative payment methods that can save You from having to use Our Cart financial transaction service provider if You desire, such as direct money transfer to Our bank account in Australia, and We still accept cheques mailed directly to Us (until further notice).

We do NOT accept cash sent by mail, as this encourages theft in the postal system and so is highly insecure. That's what cheques are best for.

For Our postal address or bank account details, please email us. Our Contact details are at the bottom of every web page on Our site/s.

Definitions (in plain English)

Our Product Definitions

Product Description

Australian Jewellery Services (AJS) manufactures, and markets online, a dedicated range of solid precious metal wire threaded, semi-precious gemstone polished spherical bead jewellery, custom hand-made and modelled into bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and anklets, for normal adult-human adornment and beauty-enhancing pleasure.

WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS!

We do NOT recommend the wearing of this jewellery range for children less than eight (8) years of age, NOR for the use of mentally handicapped or otherwise physically or developmentally disabled people, for their own SAFETY. It contains small indigestible parts that may be swallowed or expose sharp edges if purposefully or accidentally broken or pulled apart.

WARNING: DO NOT ALLOW PETS OR BABIES-IN-ARMS TO PLAY WITH OR CHEW YOUR JEWELLERY!

Precious metals are relatively soft (when compared with other metal alloys, particularly ferric based metals) and as such are particularly subject to wear and tear on moving contact parts. Precious metals are less-oxidising, so when polished to a brilliant shine can retain an attractive look for a longer lasting time than non-precious metals do.

Semi-precious gemstones are fashioned (polished) into spherical beads and have an axis hole centrally drilled through them to allow for the threading of wire through the hole allowing multiple bead segments to be bound together to form a chain of threaded bead segments.

Our range of semi-precious gems are of naturally occuring Quartz-group rock minerals such as Agate, Amethyst, Aventurine, Cairngorm, Carnelian/Cornelian, Citrine, Jasper, Praze, Onyx and Sard, amongst many other varieties available.

We also provide other minerals such as Amazonite, Jade, Lava, and Turquoise.

Many of the transparent quartz varieties have NATURALLY OCCURING visible and microscopic inclusions of other minerals within their crystal lattice, such as iron, or crytals of very fine needle-like rutile (making it rutilated quartz).

When included light-reflecting bands of rutile occur, they can create an optical effect that looks somewhat similar to a watching animal's eye as You slightly move the polished stone from side-to-side. Depending upon the stone colour, these are variously refered to as cat's eye, tiger's eye, hawk's eye, or even snake's or dragon's eye.

Translucent gems with a latticed or lace-work like pattern appearance containing a darker contrasting colour are often refered to as being somewhat similar to reptile eggs, or veins, such as snake's, or dragon's.

Opaque gems have only their external visible surface to appear as patterns that can remind people of other things, such as bands or (zebra) stripes, (leopard) spots, (giraffe) patterns, fine intricate lacework, (plant) branch-like structures, and even a dalmation (dog) pattern colouring.

Quartz-group gems are regarded as semi-precious (and not precious) because they are softer (less hard) and often have visible variations in structure, seen as inclusions and miniscule 'imperfections' of 'crack-like' blemishes.
- This makes them less suitable for polishing into flat reflective surfaces, like that of harder faceted precious gems.
- This is their NATURAL look and accepted industry-wide appearance.
Consider the NATURAL imperfections as evidence that these are tiny real pieces of nature. Pretty, attractive, gem stones.

Quartz-group gemstones are one of the most profilic gemstone quality rocks on Earth.
- This generally makes them less-expensive, and so are more affordable, (to Your and Our mutual benefit and enjoyment pleasure).

Gemstone Treatment

All gemstones are treated in some way, firstly to separate and extract them from the ground, by usual macro mineral mining methods. Further reduction methods to obtain wearable jewellery sized pieces are used by miners and lapidarists to expose the gem's beauty from the mined mother rock. Most often this initial stage is produced by experience-directed blunt impact, then by utilising more accurate abrasive grinding and cutting to produce a desired size and shape 'rough' gem. Finally, the gems are graded, sorted, parcelled and on-sold ready for finish polishing with flat facets, or with a curved cabochon or domed upper surface, or by other means such as tumbling.

Colour Enhancement of quartz microcrystaline gemstones has been in practice for many thousands of years, from the times of the most ancient pre-recorded human history, as evidenced by archiological discoveries.

Gemstone colour enhancement methods include careful heat treatment for colour change improvement and for the opening of crystalline structure, usually for enlightening and iron (impurity) element change, the subsequent use of acids for dissolution and removal of impurities, and then the use of resin-based dyes for permanent colour improvement. These are well known and documented ancient procedures that remain common practice in operation across the whole industry, often performed in the region of the source mineral excavation and processing.
(Ref: Gemstone Enhancement by Kurt Nassau (1984), Butterworths, ISBN 0-408-01447-4).

When gemstones are known to be enhanced (by humans), We (AJS) will clearly state so in the gemstone detail description using the word 'ENHANCED' for the 'Treatment' property. If We don't know the Treatment condition, We will state 'UNKNOWN'. When We do know the gemstone IS untreated, in its original natural state condition, We will state 'UNTREATED' as opposed to 'NATURAL' (as explained why, immediately following below — read on).

It is Important to understand that there is a difference between NATURAL condition gemstones, and ENHANCED condition of 'Natural' gemstones. Be aware that all gemstones found in nature are 'natural', so the word 'natural' in the description of a gemstone can be misleading if You were to think it may have meant NOT ENHANCED which it really does not, due to long-accepted industry-wide and historical common usage as explained.

To help clarify the matter, We need to expand Our description to include the definition of another gemstone related term 'MAN-MADE'. Man-Made means just that, deliberately made-by-man (or woman), like glass, or ceramics, or iron, or steel, or plastics. A better term to describe the opposite (or counter) term for 'Natural' is 'Man-Made'. Another term for 'Man-Made' is 'SYNTHETIC'.

Should any of Our gemstones be known to be Man-Made (as opposed to being sourced from that found naturally in nature), We will clearly state 'MAN-MADE' for the 'Treatment' property in the detail product description.
(NOTE: AJS do NOT currently stock NOR do We plan to use Man-Made gems in Our online product range).

Consider gemstone beauty enhancement treatment as a permanent improvement, in much the same way that many people have beauty enhancement treatment performed upon their own bodies, as a permanent improvement to their personal appearance.

In Summary, for all the reasons layed-out above, We will clearly identify semi-precious gemstone treatment methods as being either UNKNOWN, UNTREATED, ENHANCED, or MAN-MADE, by using one of those descriptors in the 'Treatment' property in the gemstone detail description. Remember that all gemstones are 'Natural', unless they were 'Man-Made'.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT 'NATURAL' SEMI-PRECIOUS GEMSTONES ARE COMMONLY 'ENHANCED', AND THAT 'ENHANCED' GEMSTONES ARE NOT 'MAN-MADE' NOR 'SYNTHETIC'.

Colour Representation

The visible colour of gemstones will vary depending upon existing lighting sources, and the resultant combined or restricted wavelengths the gemstones are being viewed under. Every situation presents slightly differently in brightness, and colour tone or hue.

Relative surroundings can affect the perceived colours of neighbouring objects, from how they look alone or in different surroundings and under differing light sources.

For example, natural daylight will greatly affect the appearance of many gemstones, which mostly appear to look much nicer and brighter when lit by direct sunlight. This feature makes them much more suitable for wearing outdoors during daylight hours.
Comparatively, nightlight tends to emphasise light versus dark, rather than colours, with everything looking duller than in daylight.

Equally, indoor lighting does a poor job of replicating natural daylight — because it mostly cannot replicate IR and UV light ranges, and the subtle but nuanced filtering of time-of-day and climatic environmental light frequencies through the atmosphere (unique to that particular viewing location's time and place) — which are all very present in daylight.

Accordingly, the gemstone pictures in Our website reproduced by Your web browser displayed on Your screen or printer, CANNOT accurately represent the EXACT colours of the gemstones as could be seen when viewed by the naked eye at the exact moment that the image was taken. Note that even the adjustment of the brightness and colour schema of your particular viewing device (display, screen, or printed page) will cause changes in the resultant appearance of Our jewellery photos that you see.
Furthermore, each and every gemstone is subtlely different to all other gemstones (even of the same type and apparent colour) due to the vagarities of nature at a microscopic level within the gemstones, and so no two stones are identically the exact same as each other. From stone to stone, each will likely have some variation of colour tones and hues. Some do look the same, however, We can only provide a closely similar "range" match to the best of our abilities using the range of stones provided by our suppliers.

ACCORDINGLY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT AJS CANNOT GUARANTEE TO PROVIDE AN ABSOLUTE IDENTICAL APPEARANCE COLOUR GEMSTONE TO "EXACTLY" MATCH THAT REPRESENTED WITHIN OUR JEWELLERY RANGE.

Jewellery Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your new jewellery purchases will help ensure they remain as beautiful as possible, for as long as possible, extending your beauty-enhancing pleasure.

Maintaining your Jewellery

We would suggest that the best maintenance is prevention. Prevention from getting damaged. Prevention from getting diry.

Follow these simple steps to ensure you gain the best experience from, and extend the life of, your jewellery items:

  1. When not in use, keep your jewellery in a proper felt-lined jewellery case separating each item so they don't scratch or entangle each other.
  2. When wearing your jewellery, do NOT apply make-up, hairspray or perfume.
You should always apply beauty products BEFORE putting on your jewellery. You want it to look its best don't you?
  3. Please do NOT wear jewellery in the ocean, or in chlorinated pools.
The chemicals (salt and chlorine) will both tarnish the metal shine, and may damage it's integrity. Leave your jewellery at home when you intend to go swimming.
If you did happen to wear your jewellery whilst swimming, you should clean it off as soon as possible afterwards, by rinsing it under tap water.
Be careful when you do, so as to not drop it down the drain. If available put a plug in the sink before rinsing.
Then carefully lay out a towel, lay out the jewellery article on the towel, fold the towel over the top of the jewellery, and carefully pat it dry, to remove all the excess water and swimming residues.
Carefully unwrap the towel and put the jewellery back on until you get home, so you don't accidentally lose it or have it stolen from your baggage.
Alternatively to putting it back-on wearing it straight away, if you intend to place your jewellery in a handbag or carry bag, first wrap it in an absorbent disposable paper towel or tissues before placing in your bag, to absorb any excess liquid that may drain out of the bead holes and catch during travel.
Replace the paper towel or tissues with a fresh dry paper towel when you get home, and give it a shake to further dislodge any trapped moisture, before you return the jewellery piece back to its place in your jewellery box.
If possible, blow dry it on a low heat setting with a hair dryer.
Check it in a day or two, and dispose of the paper towel or tissues ensuring you don't also throw away your nice jewellery pieces with the paper towel!
